mission of the American Academy of Neurology.
The FSN has changed with the times to reflect the needs of neurologists and our patients, but our Mission remains unchanged. We have chosen our Board to reflect the geographic regions and diversity of practice in our state. Each Board member has skills and assignments that are relevant to the Mission. We have added Resident and Fellow members, to incorporate them early into the network of neurology providers. Here is what we are doing:
EDUCATION:
FSN has 2 educational initiatives, under the direction of Past President Selim Benbadis. We involve the state's neurologists in the teaching, including many Board members. NEUROLOGY UPDATE, is a 2 half day course for the neurologist in practice, and focuses on important changes in treatments that have occurred within a year of the conference. NEUROLOGY FOR THE NON-NEUROLOGIST is a day and a half day course for MDs, DOs, ARNPs, PAs, PhDs, and RNs who want to improve their knowledge of neurology.
INTEGRATION OF STATE TRAINED NEUROLOGISTS INTO STATE PRACTICE:
Board Members Hubert Fernandez and David Capobianco have devised RESIDENT AND FELLOWS DAY, held on the same Saturday as NEUROLOGY UPDATE. This introduces young neurologists to each other, and gives them a chance to present a paper and/or a poster for the CV. In the afternoon, THE NEUROLOGY JOB FAIR lets the Residents and Fellows meet those Florida neurologists who are attending the meeting. It also gives non-neurologists a chance to make contacts with practice opportunities. Board Member Ramon Rodriguez will lead an outreach to include Hispanic neurologists in the activities of the FSN.
THE FLORIDA NEUROALLIANCE:
This new initiative is based on the California Neuroalliance, and Board Members Glenn Finney and Daniel Kantor represent FSN in this collaborative effort that incorporates many of Florida's advocacy groups. This allows a big and organized voice to speak to State and Federal departments in a more effective manner.
PRACTICE AND MEDICAL ECONOMIC ISSUES:
Board Members Gabriella Gerstle and former President Kamel Elzawahry keep the Board informed of relevant issues that emerge and require prompt attention.
RELATIONS WITH THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NEUROLOGY:
FSN has had close relations with the AAN through its State Affairs Committee. AAN has given support for FSN meetings at annual AAN meetings, and has been instrumental in working with the FSN Website and the Florida Neuroalliance. Many Board members are trained in advocacy through the AAN's Palatucci Advocacy Leaders Fellowship.
We are proud of our organization and our potential. We invite you to join us and be a part of organized neurology in Florida.
